Good citizenship

It’s nice as a parent when one of your children does something noteworthy, unexpected and meritorious.

I was proud of Kathleen earlier this week when she showed some excellent initiative.

The police put out a missing person alert for a 14-year-old girl, saying they had concerns for her safety. I saw the police media release on Monday morning.

Later that morning, the high school rang me to say Kathleen might need to be interviewed by police; did she have my permission?

On her way to school by bus, Kathleen and her friend saw the missing girl being pulled into a car. They reported that to the school and the police were informed. The girls even recorded the car’s registration number.

It turned out the police didn’t need to interview Kathleen and the missing girl was found safe and well. It might have been her family that Kathleen saw.

Nevertheless, it was good observation skills to notice and good citizenship to report what they saw.

Maggie lost a tooth

Maggie lost a tooth

Maggie lost a front tooth today. She was rather happy about it, because she knows the Tooth Fairy will visit tonight.

Maggie initially thought she had swallowed the tooth while eating an orange, but the tiny little thing was discovered, much to her relief because she now hopes to cash it in for $2.

I blogged about the Tooth Fairy in 2005 and how Kathleen still expected payment five years ago, aged 11, when she knew it wasn’t true.

It’s nice to know inflation hasn’t raised the $2 trade fee.

Mashup Cup winners

Michael (pictured left) was joint captain of the Mount Gambier team that defeated a Warrnambool side in the under 14 “Mashup Cup“.

The competition rules required at least five girls to be on the field for each side at any given time.

Mash-up football

Soccer captainsMichael is involved with the Round Ball summer development program in Mount Gambier.

This weekend the group will play “mash-up” games combining boys and girls against visiting teams from Warrnambool.

“For many years female players have played in local soccer matches and the Round Ball and many others have mixed girls and boys to create good outcomes and to extend individual players,” Round Ball CEO Scott Dickson said.

“This is different though; this is a competitive fixture against a talented opposition who places a high degree of importance on co-educational football.”

Each side will have 16 players in each squad, eight boys and eight girls, and five girls will play on the pitch at all times. The focus is on development and fun, letting the kids mix and play the game.

Michael has been named boys’ captain of the under 14 team. He is pictured with the girls’ captain Monique Ianella.

Six-year-old with a phone

I gave my former Jasjam phone to Maggie (6). It has a SIM, so she can receive calls, but no credit so she can’t phone out. Maggie uses the phone to play games, listen to her favorite songs and watch YouTube clips.

Suttontown school concert

Kathleen took charge of the video last night and recorded this performance from the Suttontown Primary School end-of-year concert.

The group comprises Reception/Year One students (aged 5-6).

The twins are pictured towards the right. Maggie is wearing a white shirt and reindeer ears. Jim is next to her in a green shirt and Santa hat.

It’s not the most coordinated effort you will ever see, but Maggie gives some lovely smiles to the camera and Jim shows a few Elvis-type moves with the hips.

Tennis

I just managed to fend off Michael at tennis this afternoon 6-3, 6-3. It won’t be long before he beats me. That’s a realistic assessment, not defeatist.
