Maggie’s voice
I tried to get Jim to talk into the recorder today, but he wouldn’t. So here is Maggie again:

Highland dancing

Maggie has graduated from Tiny Tots at the Kalgoorlie Dance Academy and next year will do tap dancing. After that she has a choice.
I was keen for her to do Highland dancing, which the academy has a great reputation for, but the cost is high. Someone told me it could be $1000 to get the required apparel.
Ballet or Irish dancing might be the go unless my Scottish roots and preference prevail.
A Passion for Dance
Margaret’s first dance concert was held on December 1 at the Goldfields Arts Centre. It was the Kalgoorlie Dance Academy’s end-of-year presentation: “A Passion for Dance”.
The Tiny Tots (girls aged 3-4) were making their debut stage appearances. They were introduced individually to the crowd and then performed Splish Splash.
We bought a DVD of the concert and after some experimenting I managed to make a video of Maggie’s performance and uploaded a copy to You Tube.
Jim sings Puff the Magic Dragon
I’m thinking a lot about the twins tonight because it’s their fourth birthday tomorrow. Jim likes singing. His favorite songs at the moment are Jingle Bells and Puff the Magic Dragon. Here he is singing Puff:

The twins are four!

James and Margaret will be four years old in a few hours. On one hand it seems like yesterday they were born. On the other hand it seems like they’ve been part of our lives forever.
They have unique personalities and they’re much more outgoing than Kathleen and Michael were at the same age.
Jim is a computer wizard and as the previous post describes, Maggie is handy with a digital camera. I think they’re both advanced for their age, especially Jim.
Margaret: Self portrait

Maggie took this photo of herself. I thought there was something wrong when I took four pictures tonight, went to download them and found 47 items on the memory card.
Maggie and Jim agreed it was the female twin responsible for the other 43. There were pictures of the roof, wall, pillows, Jim at the computer and this artistic self portrait. Not bad for nearly four years old.
Maggie’s voice ‘on the record’
Anyone with small children will know how they like to repeat bland jokes. Margaret was doing that tonight, so I decided to get her on the record.
I used my mobile phone to record her voice in OneNote and synced it to my PC in wav format. It was 1.1MB for this small exchange. I then used Zamzar free file conversion to make an MP3 version at 211kb, which you can now hear:

School awards
Hannans Primary School held its end-of-year concert and awards presentation tonight. Young Michael received the excellence award for his Year 6 class. That’s basically the academic prize.
John Paul College is having its awards ceremony on Friday night, which unfortunately I’ll miss because I’ll be in Melbourne visiting Dad.
He’s in hospital tonight with fluid on the heart. Hopefully the doctors can treat that easily enough and he’ll be okay when I get to see him on Saturday.
Kathleen has won an award too. The school wrote to tell us that, requesting her attendance. We don’t know what it is yet. Last year at Hannans Primary she won the Year 7 maths prize.
Busy day, busy week ahead
Today was the St Barbara’s Festival Parade in Kalgoorlie. I wrote about it last year, but in brief it’s the city’s community festival in honor of the mining industry.
We were fortunate to have 28-degree weather after some forties during the week. I took Michael, Jim and one of Michael’s friends to the parade. They had a lot of fun watching the floats and collecting lollies.
The girls stayed home to prepare for Maggie’s first dancing concert, which began at 7pm.
After the parade finished I rushed Michael’s friend home and navigated the blocked streets to reach the Goldfields Arts Centre just in time. This is a great venue. I know the manager through Rotary and she does a fantastic job under difficult circumstances. Read more

Margaret has her first dancing concert next Saturday. She has been attending dance lessons for most of this year and the concert will be the grand finale. I went along to watch the girls practice several weeks ago and it’s quite a sight. I’ve got no idea how the instructor manages to maintain the attention of 20 three-year-old girls, but she does a great job with them. It’s very much organised chaos in a cute way. There will be lots of proud mums and dads there next week with eyes only for their little princess. I wrote this post in Windows Live Writer, inserting a table with two columns, which I would have struggled doing in the WordPress dashboard. |
