Lethal bows out gracefully

Leigh Matthews has cleverly retired from the Lions coaching job with one year remaining on his contract.
He knew his time was up and wanted to get out a year early, rather than a year late. John Howard should have been that smart.
Lethal is a great coach and deserved to select the time of his departure.
It’s [...]

Lions lose the marketing plot

The Western Bulldogs thrashed the Lions by 63 points today at the MCG. I’m glad I didn’t travel to Melbourne for the game. It’s one I might have gone to if circumstances had permitted.
I want to comment on the ugly jumper the Lions wore. Why did they wear that white guernsey with strange stripes and [...]

Fitzroy and the Queen

I mentioned in the previous post the Queen attended a match between Fitzroy and Richmond in 1970. The Lions defeated the reigning premiers in that game.

Footy fever?

The football season has begun. Here in WA the supporters of West Coast and Fremantle are strutting and fretting as the case may be.
Delayed coverage from Victoria and South Australia tells me the Lions are in demise, the Kangaroos are jumping and the Cats are looking good. Do I care? Not really.
2006 is the 10th [...]

State funeral for Kerry Packer

I don’t believe a state funeral is justified for media magnate Kerry Packer. Sure, he was a successful businessman who contributed much to Australian society.
However, a state funeral should be reserved for those who served in the public interest, instead of their own.
Despite the platitudes that Packer gave millions to charity, he almost certainly avoided [...]

Workplace ad blitz wrong

The Federal Government today announced its “workplace reforms”, which it claims will deliver a simpler and fairer industrial relations system.
That may be so. I haven’t studied the detail, and frankly it’s of no great interest to me.
I object however, to the massive abuse of public funds to promote Liberal Party policy through the media.
TV ads [...]

Farewell to Princes Park

Carlton unbelievably played its last game at Princes Park today and the focus has rightly been on that club and its memories.
I’d like to contribute something from the perspective of a boy who barracked for Carlton, and later turned Fitzroy supporter while they played at the venue.
My father used to barrack for Carlton. He introduced [...]

Pride of Lions roars through

The so-called demise of the Lions was greatly exaggerated, judging by Saturday night’s ruthless performance against Essendon.
Jonathon Brown was sensational and wouldn’t have been too happy about being dragged in the final quarter, with 10 goals begging.
The Bombers are in real trouble, especially with Hird injured again. But what about Port Adelaide? Surely the biggest [...]
