Speed renting

Speed renting sounds like a great idea. I read about it in The Age today while attending a junior soccer carnival.
I had thought the soccer season finished until they sprang this on us. Apparently it was a pre-season cup that was cancelled, so they shunted it to the end of the year.
The last thing I [...]

A total of 55,436 people attended the A-League soccer final won 6-0 by Melbourne Victory. Soccer is now a mainstream spectator sport in Australia.

Race Round

Here’s an update on news from Juliet and I:
Our house in Porepunkah finally sold and we have some spare cash for the first time since 1993. Combined with the fact we can now go out for dinner or functions, leaving the little kids with the big ones safely for a couple of hours, our lives [...]

Footy fever?

The football season has begun. Here in WA the supporters of West Coast and Fremantle are strutting and fretting as the case may be.
Delayed coverage from Victoria and South Australia tells me the Lions are in demise, the Kangaroos are jumping and the Cats are looking good. Do I care? Not really.
2006 is the 10th [...]

Impressions of Esperance

I mentioned earlier that we were heading to Esperance, which we did last weekend, but due to work commitments I haven’t had a chance to post my impressions until now.
It’s nearly a four-hour drive from Kalgoorlie via Norseman. The countryside changes from forested scrub to farmland about 70km from Norseman, or 110km from Esperance.
We went [...]

The Fifth Woman

The Fifth Woman is the first novel that I’ve read by Swedish crime writer Henning Mankel. I saw a positive review of his work in The Age last year and purchased the book while in Melbourne between Christmas and New Year.
His main character, Inspector Kurt Willander, is a thoughtful introspective man who reflects on societal [...]

The past few days

I’ve been offline since Boxing Day apart from some email checks and one post while staying with my parents. Here’s an update:
1. We visited my parents at Moe. It’s awfully hot everywhere at the moment, and the Latrobe Valley was no exception. After a couple of nights, Juliet and I went to Melbourne for two [...]

A walking atlas

I don’t know why it is, but strangers seem to regard me as a walking atlas. Perhaps I have a knowledgeable face and an ungrumpy countenance, which I can’t say that I feel.
Wherever I am in the world it’s happened that people I’ve never seen before or since come to me and ask for directions.
I [...]

The flies have it

The flies are worse than usual this year. I don’t know what it is, perhaps the tropical weather, but the irritating winged devils are out in force. They even rated a mention on the Melbourne TV news recently, so the poor city folk are suffering as well.
Friends went on a bike ride two weeks ago [...]

Pass the baton

My photo appeared on page five of Victoria’s highest-circulating daily newspaper yesterday, the Herald-Sun from Melbourne.
It was to do with my non-selection to run with the Queen’s Baton in the Commonwealth Games relay.
The article quoted me correctly, but missed my main point, which was that Porepunkah has been snubbed by the relay organisers. (more…)
