Gang rape sentencing concern

There is widespread concern that none of the nine males who gang raped a 10-year-old girl in Queensland have been sent to prison. The Queensland Government is appealing the sentences.
Six teenagers who pleaded guilty last month were placed on a 12-month probation order and had no conviction recorded against them for the 2005 rape of [...]

The Desert Rat?

A friend pointed me towards a political blog called Desert Rat and told me who the author is.
The Desert Rat doesn’t identify himself on the web site; just gives this description: “The inside-out on politics: politicians, political parties and policies in Western Australia from an outsider - once on the inside.”
The gentleman obviously doesn’t wish [...]

What kind of leader are you?

What Famous Leader Are You?personality tests by similarminds.com
Thanks to Delmer for sharing his discovery of this online personality test.
I don’t think you can take much from the results, but I’d rather be compared with Gandhi than Hitler. I am a perfectionst, which I’ve always considered a weakness as well as a strength.
The question of leadership [...]

One-party state

An undesirable outcome of Kevin Rudd’s election victory is that Australia has now become a one-party state. There are Labor Governments everywhere.
This isn’t transitional either. It’s hard to see any of these governments losing their next election.
The Coalition lost yesterday for several reasons including: (more…)

Election comments

I won’t write an election article here tonight. I’ll do that on Sunday after work. However, I am posting occasional observations on Twitter: http://twitter.com/mgorey.

How do you follow the election?

Feel free to disregard this question if you’re from overseas or not interested in politics. But if you’re Australian and politically aware, how do you follow the Federal Election?
Is it TV, radio, internet, telephone, physical presence, the next day’s newspaper or some other way?
I use the internet and radio. I have several tabs open in [...]

2007 election: Kalgoorlie

I’ve felt all along the Liberal Party would retain Kalgoorlie, but lose the national election, and nothing has happened to change my mind. I could be wrong on both counts, of course.
I do feel however, it will be closer in both cases than I thought a week ago. The latest Galaxy poll shows the Coalition [...]

Vale Ian Smith

The world lost a significant man today. I won’t call him a great man, even though I believe him to be one, because there is too much controversy surrounding him, and in terms of greatness, he failed his mission.
Ian Smith was a war veteran who led his country of Rhodesia through what many thought were [...]

Newspaper novels: The truth will make you fret

There aren’t many novels about newspapers. Stories involving print journalists are far fewer than those about lawyers, soldiers and police for example.
That’s a little surprising when you consider that journalists are writers. But when you think about it, we are craftsmen while novelists are artists. We ply a trade while they follow their creative spirits. [...]

Council elections

Local government elections have just been held in Western Australia. There has been some debate about how the elections were run, so I’ll compare the electoral system with what occurs in Victoria.
Firstly, councils are generally smaller in Victoria, with just five to seven members in most cases compared with the 10 we have here. Mayors [...]
