Kevin Rudd: Fiscal conservative

Labor leader Kevin Rudd proclaimed himself a “fiscal conservative” this week and The Australian cartoonist Bill Leak followed the theme on Saturday, May 12, 2007.
The cartoon above is after “round three” of the fight. The first round shows Rudd and Howard in their corners. Howard asks Costello: “Quick, put in my my teeth” and Rudd [...]

Gullible information

The last few posts have been on the serious side, so here is some light relief. Unsurprisingly (because the web is all encompassing) there’s a web site devoted to discussion about rumours and so-called facts. It’s called Gullible.info. There’s a Fact Check Forum to discuss which are true or otherwise.
I’ve extracted a few discussion starters [...]

Stumble upon God’s law

I’m having a lot of fun with Stumble Upon, which connects people with web sites according to their areas of interest. Mine for starters were politics, technology, internet, journalism and satire.
I think it was the last of those which led me to this site headlined: Why can’t I own a Canadian? Think New Zealander instead [...]

Ant scam exposed

With thanks to Harry Hutton, the BBC reported that a Chinese man has been sentenced to death for running a scam involving giant ants.
Wang Zhendong promised investors returns of up to 60% if they put money into the fictitious ant-breeding project. Wang raised 3bn yuan ($390m; £200m) in three years. The ants are used in [...]

The Closet

I watched an excellent French movie on SBS last night called The Closet, starring Daniel Auteuil, Gerard Depardieu and Thierry Lhermitte.
The main character was a nice, dull accountant who learns that he’s about to be sacked and contemplates suicide.
A new-found friend persuades him to pretend that he’s a homosexual, thereby raising the spectre of discrimination [...]

Boss of the angels

Dude is preapring for his First Communion and Confirmation this weekend. He had to choose a confirmation name, which is generally a saint’s name.
I have a book of saints and Dude wanted to know who’s feast day was on his birthday. That honor he shares with St Enda, an early Christian who founded monasteries in [...]

Funny links

One of my occasional blog reads is Rory Blyth’s web site. In a recent entry he proposed shifting Canada and Greenland so Alaska could be joined to the other American states.
In the comments I came across a link that reported Australia’s shift to the North Atlantic. Very clever.

Baby Liberation Front (BLF)

The initials BLF used to stand for Builders Laborers Federation. This was a corrupt militant union renowned for acts of industrial sabotage.
The initials have been adopted today by another radical group known as the Baby Liberation Front. The chief organiser in Australia is our daughter Margaret (pictured left).
The BLF’s mission is to achieve a better [...]

The endangered roadworker

The Australian Roadworker is an endangered species. Once prolific throughout the countryside its numbers have dwindled rapidly in recent years.
The roadworker, distinctive in its orange coat, has become a rare sight on our highways and byways.
For the past three months I’ve been delayed at roadworks near Yackandandah during my weekly drive to Wodonga. Often I [...]
