Middleton, South Australia

When you live as close to the beach as we do it may seem strange to drive 82km to a beach, but that’s what we did today.

We went to Middleton on the Fleurieu Peninsula between Goolwa and Port Elliot. We took the Goolwa road from Mount Compass.

The town is mainly holiday homes, as far as I can tell, but apparently it has a permanent population of 818, according to the 2006 census.

Southend is a small fishing village about 75km from Mount Gambier. We went there today for a swim at the beach. It was the hottest day of the summer so far (38 degrees) and only the second day over 30. Unfortunately, it was also very windy. The beach at Southend has clean, firm white sand. [...]

December 2008 weather summary

The first month of summer in Mount Gambier recorded an average maximum temperature of 20.4 degrees (69F) compared with 31.8 in Kalgoorlie (89F). That’s a substantial difference, and I much prefer the cooler conditions. Overnight temperatures showed a similar contrast. Cool start to summer

Kalgoorlie had fairly mild weather in November compared with my recollections. The average daily maximum was 25 degrees compared with a long-term average of 30. I didn’t like the relentless heat of summer in Kalgoorlie. Having grown up in Gippsland, I’m a bit soft I suppose when it comes to typical Australian summers. Mount Gambier [...]
