New video camera

I bought a Sanyo Xacti nine-megapixel video camera through eBay from Hong Kong before it was readily available in Australia.
The gadget has only just arrived and I haven’t had much time to experiment with it yet, but first impressions are very positive.
It’s small and shoots high quality. There are recording options for television standard or [...]

Trying four new web services

I’m currently trying four new web services and I’m pretty impressed with all of them.
Kwout is responsible for the images you see in this post and some of my other recent articles.
With Kwout you can quote part of a web page as an image with an image map. You need to add a bookmarklet to [...]

BlogUpp link exchange

I committed space on my sidebar yesterday to BlogUpp after reading a positive review.
It claims to be “the easiest recipe ever for a more effective and interactive web promotion.”
BlogUpp uses an iframe in the sidebar. The theory is that users promote two other blogs/sites in exchange for 90 percent cross-promotion back to their site, which [...]

Ancient language goes modern

It’s rather ironic I learned about The Vatican’s web site from a blog named The Inquisitr
I’m not surprised The Vatican has a web site; it’s just I had never thought about it before and had never visited.
As The Inquisitr reveals, a Latin section was only recently added.
I’ve never studied Latin and I was [...]

Favorite bookmarks

I use Google Bookmarks with the Firefox extension GMarks.
The picture shows my “most used” links since I started browsing in Ubuntu about two weeks ago.
It’s not a long-term record, but it’s pretty indicative. I check my own sites regularly (the top two) to see if any comments have been made on posts. (more…)

Slaves to email

I don’t intend to cross-post regularly between here and OzComments, but the issue of being slaves to email seemed worth mentioning at both places.
Sharon MacNevin from Email Management Solutions issued a statement today after speaking at a conference in Perth. In summary:
MacNevin said the rapid growth of email means that many organisations and individuals have [...]

FeedBlendr

Do you use an online aggregator or desktop software to read RSS feeds? I mostly use Google Reader and have an account at Bloglines as well.
I’ve also discovered FeedBlendr.
It takes the feeds you give it, pulls the individual entries from each of them, sorts them in date order and provides a new, blended feed of [...]

Operating system compatibility

This isn’t meant to be a geek blog, but I want to vent a little here. I contacted the manager of a commercial website yesterday to point out the site didn’t render properly in Linux.
It’s the first site I have ever come across which does not view sensibly in Linux. The response:
“Thanks for letting us [...]

Ubuntu Hardy Heron

I’m using Linux again for the first time in about nine months. The release of Ubuntu Hardy Heron caught my attention and I decided to give it a go.
I recently revisited Puppy and Sidux without satisfaction. The main problem with Sidux was I just couldn’t get the fonts to look good. (more…)

Twitter spam

Jessica Dolcourt writes about Twitter spam on Webware.
I go through periods when I tweet regularly and then I do nothing for a week.
For such an inactive and boring tweeter I was surprised to find that 15 followers had jumped on my bandwagon in the past few weeks. (more…)
