Super Test tickets hard to get

I don’t mean for this to become a sports blog, but it’s the main topic of conversation in Australia at the moment, apart from Telstra, which has been done to death. Footy finals and the Ashes are a powerful combination and great conversation starters.
This entry is simply to state that I will be attending at [...]

Telstra on the wrong tram

Political commentator Paul Kelly was scathing in his attack on Telstra’s new management this morning.
Kelly said on ABC Television the Telstra assault on government regulation is alienating all parties, driving down the share price, and has no hope of success.
I have to agree with him. I’ll go further and say it’s damaging the public goodwill [...]

Suburb watch

Here’s my register of Australian web sites and forms that ask people which suburb they live in, instead of "Town/suburb" or "Location". Please add to this if you come across one.

ADSL comes to Porepunkah

I want to praise Telstra here for bringing Porepunkah into the 21st century by enabling ADSL broadband through our exchange.
That’s a fine result for our small town considering just 50 or so people registered interest.
The Commonwealth Government subsidised this connection, so praise there also. It’s been my contention for a long time that all [...]

Where now for Labor?

The Australian Labor Party is surely at a crossroads. Whether it can become relevant again at a national level remains to be seen.
I’m probably not the only person nervous about the looming prospect of John Howard controlling the Senate. I would feel much safer with the balance of power in the hands of a responsible [...]

I don’t live in a suburb

An irritant that never fails to bug me is how many companies and organisations assume that everyone lives in a city or suburb.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve filled out a form in hard copy or on the web, and when you come to describe the place where you live, the question [...]

Bigpond fun and games

I wrote on April 19 that I wanted to cancel my Bigpond dial-up account. The Bigpond web site enables you to open accounts and switch between plans, but won’t let you close one.
So I sent them an e-mail on April 19, giving my user name and password, and asking that the account be closed.
I received [...]

ADSL demand sham

Telstra’s ADSL demand register is a classic example of how the company treats rural Australians with disdain.
My business would benefit greatly from ADSL, but the chance of it being available through the Porepunkah exchange on a demand basis is minimal simply due to the small number of properties.
Linking service provision with demand is Telstra’s way [...]
