Watching and playing tennis

I’ve always had a mild interest in tennis. I enjoy playing it and don’t mind watching it, but not to the same degree I follow other sports, especially rugby, cricket and Australian football.

My father taught me to play squash before he let me use his Pancho Gonzales tennis racquet.

Dad was good at both sports until his back injury precluded him from playing much.

World Tennis Challenge Adelaide

Young Michael and I went to the World Tennis Challenge in Adelaide tonight. The challenge is a three-day exhibition tournament featuring ad-hoc teams from Europe, the Americas, Australasia and Rest of the World.

The players are a mix of current stars and yesterday’s heroes. Tonight we saw Frenchman Michael Llodra, ranked 45 in the world, play Stan Wawrinka from Poland, ranked 23.

I haven’t taken many sports pictures over the past couple of years and felt very rusty today when I tried to get some shots of Michael playing in a tennis tournament at Happy Valley.

This was the best effort, but most of the other 90 or so weren’t worth keeping.

Tennis defeat

I played tennis against Michael Jnr today for the first time in several months. He won 6-1, 2-6, 6-5 (9-7). Obviously I started badly, very rusty, and couldn’t land a first serve. Felt good in the second set and served well, but tired at the end. Tweet Pin It

Tennis talent

Michael has just finished his first season of competitive tennis. He won his singles and doubles matches in the grand final, but his team lost by one game. The final score was something like 8 sets 43 games to 8-42. Tweet Pin It
