Gordon Rattray, Fitzroy

Gordon Rattray

According to The Argus of April 2, 1924, Gordon Rattray was “a brainy player with dash and weight”.

Wikipedia says that Rattray debuted for Fitzroy in 1917, but his progress was stalled when he missed the following season due to military service. Rattray came back to the club in 1919 and won their best and fairest trophy.

He won it again in 1921 and was a premiership player in 1922.

Jack Moriarty

Jack Moriarty was one of the greatest full forwards in the history of Australian football. The pocket dynamo kicked 660 goals in 170 games, earning AFL Hall of Fame honors in 2004.

A son of dual Fitzroy premiership player Geoff Moriarty, Jack crossed to the Maroons in 1924 after playing 13 games for Essendon in 1922 and then being relegated to the seconds. He kicked seven goals in each of his first three games with Fitzroy.

Clarrie Sherry

Fifteen or so years ago I bought some football cards of Fitzroy players. I used to collect football cards and at one stage had nearly every one issued between 1974 and 1976.

I picked up these historical cards from eBay.

Clarrie Sherry played 75 games for Fitzroy between 1918 and 1923.

When I was a kid in the 1970s, the Victorian Football League comprised 12 Victorian teams.

They all had their own home grounds except Richmond, which shared the MCG with Melbourne and Hawthorn, which shared Princes Park with Carlton.

My team, Fitzroy, used St Kilda’s old ground at the Junction Oval.

The commentary at the end of the video says the Fitzroy faithful dare dream of their first premiership in 35 years.

I wish that was what we were dreaming for today!

In 1979 it didn’t seem so long ago since Fitzroy had last won a premiership in 1944. I thought we would win a flag between 1979 and 1986, but it wasn’t to be.
