Windy weather signals change of season

I don’t mean for this blog to become political, but those are the things that are interesting to me at the moment.

I’m intrigued by the appeal of Sarah Palin to many Americans and the apparent mediation in Zimbabwe.

Along with the ongoing WA election saga there would be plenty to write about. Instead, I just want to comment it was very windy in Mount Gambier today. Read more »

Nostalgic for Kalgoorlie

I’ve been feeling nostalgic for Kalgoorlie this week. It’s a great time of year there, heading into Race Round (September 7-13) after Diggers & Dealers.

The weather is perfect unless the wind picks up, low 20s, hardly any rain.

Mount Gambier needs rain and nobody audibly complains about the fact there have been showers every day for the past 28, except one.

Jim (4) complained though. He wants to know when it will be spring.

He and Maggie spent more than half their life so far in Kalgoorlie and they don’t appreciate the wet weather. It doesn’t bother me, because I’m either at work or home most of the time, and I’m used to it previously.

Kalgoorlie has an extremely hot summer, which I didn’t like, but you can generally avoid the heat and plan your holidays then.

I think I’ll feel a calling to Kal every year about this time.

Remembering the rain

We’ve spent about 10 days in Mount Gambier so far and we have hardly seen the sun. We assume it’s there because it gets faintly light for about nine hours and then goes dark again.

There wasn’t much rain initially, just lots of fog, cloud and drizzle. That changed in the last couple of days with consistent rain, sometimes heavy.

There’s nothing unusual about rain in south-east South Australia, especially at this time of year, but we had nearly forgotten what winter rain is like after two years at Kalgoorlie.

I actually like the sound of rain on a tin roof.

If time permits I’ll visit the racetrack tomorrow. The Border Watch sponsors the first event.

Feeling the cold

Winters in Kalgoorlie are short and not very cold, but temperature is a relative thing. It does get down to zero in Kalgoorlie but it’s a dry crisp cold and days starting that way tend to warm up nicely.

I only encountered a handful of days when the wind was strong enough and chilly enough to make indoors more attractive than being outside.

Moving back to south-eastern Australia we’ve experienced a very mild start to winter, but there have been a few hints of what’s to come.

Stopping near Ballarat for lunch I wanted to close the door to keep the cold out; haven’t done that for three years. Read more »

No sign of winter

The temperature at Kalgoorlie has been hovering in the high 20s for the past week and there is no sign of a cool change in the forecast.

The weather we’re having would be considered balmy in summer at Mount Gambier.

I’m not enjoying it though. The flies are back and the cool mornings are gone now too. As for rain, what’s that?

There were a few spots while we watched Michael’s soccer on Saturday. Maggie (4) came running over to tell us “something’s dripping”. She sees rain so rarely she had no idea what it was.

Record low temperatures

I don’t like the heat and I welcome unexpected cool weather when it comes in Kalgoorlie during summer. Unfortunately I missed most of the current cool change until today.

Kalgoorlie has received the tail end of a tropical cyclone which became a rain depression across inland parts of Western Australia. That’s not unusual, but the low temperatures are.

Kalgoorlie had a record low February maximum temperature of 15 degrees on Tuesday followed by 15.1 degrees on Wednesday. The maximum today (Thursday) was a new February record low of 14.8 degrees.

We’ve had 63mm of rain so far this month.

According to the Kalgoorlie Miner: Bureau of Meteorology manager of public weather services Neil Bennett said there was some unusually colder weather around, particularly in the Goldfields region.

“To be as low as 15C, that’s really really unusual,” Mr Bennett said.

Cooler winds from the southeast and extensive cloud along with the impact of Tropical Cyclone Nicholas are blamed for the colder weather.

“They (Kalgoorlie and neighbouring areas) have had cool surface winds and little in the way of sunshine because they have had so much cloud cover over the last few days so obviously the temperatures have been very low over a period of time so they are not able to pick up to any great maximum during the day.”

Kalgoorlie dawn

Dawn light, Kalgoorlie
We’ve had some mild weather lately and I’ve taken to going for longer walks in the morning. I discovered a little-used track (pictured) at the back of Hannans Golf Course which I follow and then cut back through the fairways.

I’ve actually seen more wildlife on these walks than in the Karlkurla nature reserve.

There isn’t much grass on the golf course and the “greens” are sand. For those who don’t know, an 18-hole international-standard grass course was supposed to have been finished by now and it is supposedly still under development.

There is some grass on the Hannans course though and it greened up nicely after last week’s rain. In the dawn light it looks quite attractive and the kangaroos love it.

Kalgoorlie had a spectacular sunset on Thursday. Kalgoorlie Miner journalist Georgia Loney captured the scene.

Unusual summer weather

I’ve been resigned to expecting and experiencing hot weather in Kalgoorlie during summer, which is basically the period from late October until early April.

Satellite mapQuite amazingly therefore, we had a maximum temperature of just 18 degrees today on January 3. That’s if you don’t count the fact it was 25 degrees at midnight. Rain started falling about 6am and hasn’t stopped all day.

It’s been a slow, steady rain; the type that’s great for the garden. It’s very unusual for Kalgoorlie at this time of year, or any time of year for that matter.

Apparently a rare cold front has pushed its way up from the south and intercepted the remnants of Cyclone Isobel meandering down from the north. The Weather Bureau was forecasting strong winds, which so far haven’t materialised, and heavy rain, which is likely if the current conditions continue. Up until 4pm though only 12mm had fallen. It’s now 6pm and it’s still raining.

PS: We finished up with 45mm of rain from the system and had four pleasantly cool days.
