Unusual summer weather

I’ve been resigned to expecting and experiencing hot weather in Kalgoorlie during summer, which is basically the period from late October until early April.
Quite amazingly therefore, we had a maximum temperature of just 18 degrees today on January 3. That’s if you don’t count the fact it was 25 degrees at midnight. Rain started [...]

Weekend at Esperance

We enjoyed a long weekend on the coast at Esperance. The weather was warm enough for swimming on Saturday but the wind picked up and it was cooler on Sunday.
We drove to Cape Le Grande National Park, about 60km from the town, and I took this photo of Lucky Bay.

Our first house at Porepunkah

The first house we ever owned was at Port Pirie, South Australia. We bought it for $45,000 in 1993. We sold it to my parents when we moved to Eden.
We bought a house again when we moved to Porepunkah, Victoria. It was a small three-bedroom hardiplank home on a delightful block in Seamer Street, and [...]

Back on the bike

I haven’t ridden the bike much this year, in fact not at all for the past few months until today.
I’m gearing up for the Balzano Barrow Race this weekend when I’ll be one of five people in a team pushing an aerodynamic wheelbarrow 21km from Kanowna to Kalgoorlie. We’re supposed to finish in about one [...]

First fun run

I ran a fun run today for the first time. The words “fun” and “run” are really contradictory, especially in an organised context, however I did enjoy the overall experience.
I ran 4km in the GMF Health event. The 10km event seemed a little intimidating given my current fitness and the warmth of the weather.
I still [...]

Mild weather continues

I stopped checking the weather forecast for a while and I didn’t miss anything because every day was 23 degrees.
The temperature is now starting to increase and the forecast for Tuesday is 27 degrees. These figures are incomprehensible in May for someone from cooler climes in Victoria. The last low-level snowfall we experienced at Porepunkah [...]

Cool weather surprise

I mentally prepared myself for Kalgoorlie to have an unrelenting hot summer, so the 45 degrees I struck upon arrival came as no surprise.
What has surprised me is the cool weather of the past few days. Yesterday’s maximum was just 18 degrees, which is 15 below the January average. We also had drizzle for much [...]

Good walking and cycling trails

There are some great walking and cycling trails in Kalgoorlie. I thought I’d miss the rail trail around Porepunkah, but the tracks here are just as interesting.
There’s one that starts close to my home, goes around the edge of the golf course and skirts several parks.
The weather was much cooler today, so I ran 5km [...]
