CSS optimisation

I had a strange problem with one of my stylesheets that drove me nuts and beat me into submission. I searched Google for possible solutions, without success. I’m posting the problem and solution here in case it can help someone else in the future.

A visitor left a defamatory comment on this website overnight, which I didn’t notice until this morning. I’m sorry it took that wrong to remove it.
