I’ve uploaded to YouTube a short video of the West Adelaide Football Club song, part of a highlights package from the club’s 1983 premiership season.

That was the most recent premiership for the Bloods, as they are known, although things are shaping up fairly well for a serious tilt this year.

Full Points Footy has this to say about the flag: “In 1983 everything slotted into place as the Bloods proceeded to win all bar four of their minor round matches to secure the minor premiership with ease. A 24.16 (160) to 13.8 (86) second semi final triumph over Norwood followed, and when grand final day arrived with Sturt providing the opposition there were few who doubted where the premiership pennant was heading. The Double Blues managed to keep in touch for a quarter and a bit, but West always seemed to have something in reserve and once they broke clear there was no stopping them.”

Back in 1983 the SANFL was a rival to the VFL in terms of standard and professionalism. Attendances were pretty good too.

The Westies song has the same tune as Hawthorn’s in the AFL. I don’t know the history of when it was adopted. If anyone can fill me in, please comment below.

I have noticed the opening line has changed from “We’re a happy team at Blood House” to “We’re a happy team at Westies”.

Here is the video:

The longer video from SA Football Archive is here.

I don’t post YouTube videos for the sake of it, but this one I found strangely addictive after several viewings.

It’s in Danish, from the 1984 movie Midt Om Natten. You must read the subtitles and watch the video to appreciate it:

According to Wikipedia, Kim Larsen has had a number of successful album releases throughout the 80s, 90s and 00s and is possibly the most successful artist in Danish popular music history.

The New York Times review of the movie says: “Bohemians Arnold (Erik Clausen) and Benny (Kim Larsen), unemployed plumbers who earn their livelihood moonlighting, create their own little anarchic world in an abandoned factory. This gentle satire owed its fleeting popularity to its stars, cavern-mouthed pop star Larsen and comedian Clausen, the latter especially known for his satirical comments on the Danish establishment in particular and bureaucracy in general. A throwback to the wild and woolly 1968 Summer of Love, Midt om Natten was slightly anachronistic already when it premiered.”

Here is a catchy 1986 song by Larsen called Jutlandia. The Jutlandia served as a hospital ship in the Korean War.

Mobile phones should be banned in schools. While ostensibly a communications device, modern phones are also cameras and video recorders with internet access.

The media reports today that footage of local children fighting on school grounds and in public places has been published on YouTube.

It appears likely the young people involved knew they were being filmed, which implies consent.

However, the consent of a 15-year-old carries little weight when the consequences are so serious.

The video itself can become evidence in court, which could potentially lead to convictions and a criminal record.

And how will those young people feel in 15 years time when their own children are made aware of Dad’s youthful indiscretion, recorded for posterity on the web? It would be sad if a mature individual felt any pride in such behaviour.

As adolescent psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg says, banning mobile phones in schools is only part of the solution, but it’s a starting point.

Parents and children managed for more than 150 years without needing mobile phones to communicate.

Surely, if there is an emergency, a concerned parent can ring the school and the student can be contacted.

If a student must have a mobile phone for security reasons after school, it can be deposited in a locker or at the school office during the day.

Such measures won’t stop fights being recorded, but at least there will be fewer such incidents during school hours.

There can then be a more concerted effort to address the societal issues, such as desensitisation to violence.

Oh dear! You Tube has taken over the world. It was one of the saddest days of my life when Myrtleford lost the 2005 grand final by one point to Lavington.

For international visitors, this is the Ovens and Murray Football League in North East Victoria/southern NSW. The grand final was played at Lavington (Albury) in front of about 15,000 people. Quit after the game finishes.
