I snapped this picture today of these giant turbines at the Canunda Wind Farm between Mount Gambier and Caprneter Rocks near Tantanoola.
There are 23 turbines and the farm has a total capacity of 46 megawatts, which yields approximately 135,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year.
This provides clean electricity for about 30,000 South Australian homes and reduces carbon dioxide pollution by around 135,000 tonnes per year.
Each turbine consists of a 67-metre high tower and 40-metre long blades, making it 107 metres in height to the tip of the blade.
These wind turbines rotate at speeds between 9 rpm and 19 rpm, depending on the wind speed. They weren’t moving at all in the still conditions today.
The distribution line is 16km long and transports the generated electricity from the wind farm to a nearby substation at Snuggery. The distribution line traverses mostly roadside verges.
Construction of the farm cost $92.5 million and it was opened in March 2005.

Firstly thanks for your interest in Canunda, I am the Site Manager there. However I have to inform you that the turbine in centre shot of your report is a Vestas V90 which belongs to Infigen. Ours are V80s which are easilly identified by the International Power logo on the left side of the nacelle. Once again thanks for the interest in my industry.
