It’s interesting that when a socially conservative community leader makes public comment in Australia he/she is shot down in flames by the media and the loony left. When a loony left leader makes public comment it’s treated seriously.
For example, anyone can say anything about the Iraq war, refugees, forests, etc and they’re likely to get front-page coverage without scrutiny or proper questioning.
I’ve seen numerous examples where “demonstrations” in Melbourne attended by fewer than 500 people have won TV news coverage, while other, bigger events have not had any coverage at all.
Conversely, Cardinal George Pell (pictured) makes a thoughtful speech, and Governor General Michael Jeffrey makes some rare public comments; they’re both attacked from all fronts.
The Cardinal delivered a speech in America about the rise of secularism and its adverse effect on modern democracy.
He said: “The emptiness within secular democracy can be filled with darkness by political substitutes for religion” and commented on the rise of Islam in western societies, which he implied was in lieu of Communism as an alternative.
He remarked that his speech would “provoke panic in some quarters and derision in others” and was quickly proved correct as Islamic leaders said they considered the comments a slur. No doubt others will follow tomorrow.
The Governor General expressed concern at abortion rates and said they could be made lower through education and by promoting contraceptives.
The left slammed him for making “political” comments, conveniently ignoring the fact that Sir William Deane spoke out on all sorts of issues including Aboriginal reconciliation, which made him their darling.
There are double standards in this country when it comes to debate on social issues. Conservatives control the Parliament, but radicals dominate the media.
