Minnows at the World Cup

Dwayne Leverock bowls for BermudaThe World Cup is about to start in the West Indies and the usual controversy has erupted over whether the so-called minnow nations should be there.

Bermuda is likely to be the weakest performer, although not much is expected from Canada either. England dismissed Bermuda for 45 runs in a warm-up game and won by 241 runs.

The “star” for Bermuda was left-arm spinner Dwayne Leverock (pictured) who took 2/32 off his 10 overs.

Leverock, a policeman, weighs in at 270lb. “I used to be bigger but I lost weight for the tournament,” he said.

I think the minnows have a right to be there. For many it’s their single chance to play against the best in the world.

There’s a fairytale element about their rare success, such as the previous World Cup when Kenya made it to the semi finals.

As for Leverock, I certainly wouldn’t want to cross him if I were a Bermudan criminal.
