Free association procedure

Thanks to Capricorn Cringe, I discovered Unconscious Mutterings and its free association example.

Here are my responses to this week’s words:

  1. Food :: Steak
  2. Death :: Dad
  3. Cafeteria :: Coffee
  4. Need :: Petrol
  5. Born :: Warragul
  6. Stitch :: Naked
  7. Badly :: Needed
  8. Blocks :: Toys
  9. Chuck :: Vomit
  10. Spiral :: Rings

According to Wikipedia, free association is a technique used in psychoanalysis and in psychodynamic theory, which was originally devised by Sigmund Freud out of the hypnotic method of his mentor and co-worker, Josef Breuer.

In free association, psychoanalytic patients are invited to relate whatever comes into their minds during the analytic session, and not to censor their thoughts. This technique is intended to help the patient learn more about what he or she thinks and feels, in an atmosphere of non-judgmental curiosity and acceptance.
