Ice magic

I’ve got a busy week happening work wise, which is nice for a change and good for dwindling finances. I’m writing two feature articles for Stock and Land in addition to my regular PR work. That’s my excuse for only writing now about the weekend.

Tower Hill

On Saturday I walked up the Tower Hill lookout. I now realise it’s called that because there’s a massive electricity pylon on top. The wires unfortunately block an otherwise spectacular view of Bright and Mt Feathertop.

The walk from the base was shorter (and steeper) than I expected, so I decided to keep following the track down the other side. I thought it would lead to Stackey Gully Road, which I could see in the distance.

The track looped around the hill and a few times I thought I’d got it wrong, but eventually I came to the junction of Stackey Gully Road and Walkers Lane. This was a fascinating look at the hinterland of Bright and well worth the effort. There’s a mix of pine and native forest and the pot-holed roads are barely accessible by 4WD.

Some of the smaller tracks leading into the bush had names like Union Jack and Magazine. I presume they date back to the gold mining era. It would be good to know if any of that heritage survives in terms of machinery or mine sites. I doubt if many people in Bright have a clue.

The boys of old Fitzroy

On Saturday afternoon I settled in for a delayed telecast of the Collingwood v Lions AFL game. It was fantastic to see a Fitzroy jumper being worn again at the MCG.

I really can’t understand why the Lions don’t play at least one Melbourne game each year in a Fitzroy jumper. If would soften the pain for people like me, increase membership and boost merchandise sales.

The hierarchy keep saying they don’t want to upset the Bears supporters, but I can’t seriously imagine that any Bears person would have a problem with it. If they want balance I wouldn’t object to the club wearing a Bears jumper in one Brisbane game if that’s what they want, but again I don’t imagine there’s sentiment in Brisbane for that to happen.

Toboggan play

On Sunday I took Dude (our seven year old Michael) up Mt Buffalo for toboggan play. I keep expecting rain to wash away the good snow, and that’s now starting to happen.

He had a ball. We even saw a wombat with a baby trailing behind it. It’s funny the places you see wombats. The last time I encountered one that close was on a beach at Wilsons Promontory.

Sunday was the first time I’ve seen Lake Catani completely iced over and I’m not sure that’s happened in recent years.

The ice was probably thick enough for kids and people skinnier than me to skate on. I held onto Dude while he tested the crust and it supported his tiny weight no problem.

The reflection from the ice in the sunshine, surrounded by snow, was a magnificent sight and not one that you can witness at many places in Australia.
