It might be a long shot but I’m Rob Hocking too! My family come from South Australia too and we have an old family myth of a brother who left SA for Kalgoorlie never to return and who worked in newspapers ………

Hi Rob, the Hocking family is famous for establishing the Kalgoorlie Miner, of course. The Miner office is a beautiful building and I hope it always stays there. I have a picture of it on my wall in Mount Gambier.

Hi Michael
My name is Rob Hocking and my father ran the Kalgoorlie Miner for West Australian Newspapers in the 1970′s and my grand father was one of the three sons who inherited a share of the paper from their father my great grand father. My father now suffers dementia but his sister of City Beach Perth WA has been researching family history for some time. I believe there may be family links to SA and Mt Gambier

I recall spending a lot of time at the papers premises and an in the rear warehouse of old fashion business in the main street called Sheads and it does bring back fantastic memories.

Good work Michael! Keep on pushing management. Technically it is very easy to do, since the whole paper is already put together electronically. All we need is gateway to the net. Having some minor Monthly charge for viewing is not a problem for audience in Goldfields and it would be nice to have some source of local news when out of town.

Yvette, I've said all along that I could get a site up an running within days if management gave me the all-clear. Last week I put a new proposal to the company to do just that.

It seems the launch of our presence within http://www.thewest.com.au is imminent, and it was suggested I should wait to see how it looks.

I am concerned the Kalgoorlie Miner's identity will be submerged or secondary to The West Australian under that scenario, but maybe I'm being premature.

I was wondering why the Kal Miner isn,t online yet. I live in the Solomon Islands and really miss reading the local news. Even The newspaper in this third world country is online.

The latest outlook is for the Miner site to be live by the end of July 2007. I'll say more when I have something definite.
