We had a look around Moonta today. Some of the buildings date back to the 1840s.
Moonta was briefly the biggest town in South Australia while copper mining was in full swing. Many of the early settlers were Cornish.
The jetty was built in 1872 to encourage people to settle and purchase building blocks where the township had been surveyed.
The construction followed a vocal political campaign and strong rivalry with nearby Wallaroo.
The water is very shallow and it took a number of years before the jetty was completed to enable larger vessels to berth. The jetty was connected to the railway in April 1880.
I like the mix of grey color tones in this photo I took today.
