Natural strongman

Michael at the gym

I took Michael to the gym this afternoon and stumbled across the South Australian Strongest Man competition.

Michael fractured his ankle playing soccer five weeks ago, and goes to Anytime Fitness in Torrensville several times a week for exercise. While checking the gym’s Facebook page I found this photo of him.

Anyhow, dropping him off today, the carpark was full and a loudspeaker was blaring.

I was just in time to see the final attempt by the state’s strongest man, Jordan “Biggie” Steffens, to carry 150kg in each hand over 25 metres. He failed, but I don’t think I could lift 150kg, let alone carry 300kg.

Jordan came third at the World Natural Strongman Federation Grand Prix earlier this year.

Reflecting on what I had seen, it seemed strange to hold this event in a gym carpark. While not a major spectator sport, it’s certainly interesting to watch, and maybe could have been half-time entertainment at an AFL match or a feature attraction in Rundle Mall.

The announcer said that Jordan is heading off to the Olympics in England. I assume this is the Natural Strongman Olympics to be held at Thorpe Park in August.

Here’s a picture of Jordan (courtesy Anytime Fitness):

And here’s a short video I took with my phone of the final attempt:
