I’m typing this article using WB Editor, an offline WYSIWYG desktop blogging tool. It’s a shareware program costing US$20 (I’m testing the free beta version).
It gives me a visual text box within the actual site frame to write. I can also insert images and music.
The visual aspect differentiates it from the free Windows Live Writer and the web-based WriteToMyBlog.
An advantage that all of them have over the native authoring tool in WordPress is the easy ability to insert photographs and wrap text around them.
On the downside, none of these applications integrate easily with tags and I found that Bad Behaviour blocked the two desktop programs. They also don’t have a “more” option to split the post.
I can see how these applications would be very useful for someone unfamiliar with the “back end” of blogs. WB Editor, in particular, is aesthetically neat.
For me though, I will only use them for special purposes, such as text formating and inserting tables.
I like to visit the WordPress admin area regularly for various practical reasons and if it’s a straight text post I may as well write there.
