I compared insurance quotes online to cover the meagre furniture and effects in my Mile End unit.
I don’t have much to worry about, but a fire could feasibly set me back $10,000.
I nearly choked when I saw the SGIC quote for $362. I then looked at AAMI, where we have our other insurance, and the quote for “fire and theft” coverage was much more palatable at $128.
SGIC quoted on contents valued at $10,000 while the AAMI insurance is for up to $25,000 worth of possessions.
There may be some differences in the coverage details, but frankly I’m not concerned about that. For instance, AAMI insures products to an individual maximum value of $1000, which is fine because I have nothing there that’s worth that much.
The take-home message: It pays to shop around.

I pay SGIC $22.98 a month for contents insurance.
I think everyone should have insurance because even if you don’t have much else of value, replacing your laptop if you go up in smoke can be a huge investment hassle you don’t need.
Glad to know you have settled in Michael, and hope the first day on the job went well.

It had to be about 2003 that I bought a motorcycle (since gone). I called my auto insurance people and they quoted me something outrageous for insurance… I’m going to say $500. I then called another big-name company, and for the same policy paid $98.00.
As you say, it pays to shop around.
Insurance is definitely something where it pays to shop around, as with so many other things.

I hope your first day at the job went well too, Michael.
Will be interesting to hear a bit more about it.
It will be very different for you having to work for the ‘other side’ of the media world, as I believe many journalists refer to those in public relation-oriented fields.
I wonder how long it will be before you start to take a negative view of nosy journalists, LOL?!
