I’ve made changes again to my online photo storage. I alternate between wanting to use a third-party service like Flickr and hosting them myself.
It probably makes more sense to use Flickr, because they will stay there indefinitely without costing me anything (although I have a Pro account) and there’s a global user community to share and comment on pictures.
However, photos can be easily pilfered and used without permission. And it’s nice to have full control over how your own content is presented.
I’m currently using a free PHP script called Piwigo to store my photos at www.gorey.me. I had never heard of Piwigo before, but it has a large and active community, with plenty of themes and plugins. It was easy to set up and easier to use than Coppermine and Gallery, which I have tried before.
I’ve also been through my Flickr account and made most family photos private. My older kids don’t like having their photos published, and I respect that. Family members can ask me for permission to see those pictures there, or in my private self-hosted gallery.
Baarlo, Limburg, Netherlands
I don’t think I’ve blogged about the above photo previously. It’s in the Travel category, which I still need to populate.
I took the photo in December 1991 at Baarlo in Limburg, Netherlands. I was staying there with my grandmother’s sister and her son, my mother’s cousin.
According to Wikipedia, Baarlo today has 5199 residents and four castles.
In November 1944 the town’s church was blown up by the Germans and restoration was not possible. The new church was completed in 1955.
I remember visiting the church one evening and listening to the local choir rehearsing for Christmas masses.
