I viewed part of the ceremony surrounding the opening of the South Australian Parliament this week.
I was in the Legislative Assembly when the usher of the black rod summonsed members to the upper house, the Legislative Council.
I then stood on the steps (pictured in a 1947 photograph) and watched the Governor arrive to proclaim the opening.
There was a police band and a military honor guard. The ceremony is inherited from Westminster.

The picture below shows the ceremony of Parliament’s opening in 1939. It was not quite so grand this year.
