Opening of Parliament

I viewed part of the ceremony surrounding the opening of the South Australian Parliament this week.

South Australia ParliamentI was in the Legislative Assembly when the usher of the black rod summonsed members to the upper house, the Legislative Council.

I then stood on the steps (pictured in a 1947 photograph) and watched the Governor arrive to proclaim the opening.

There was a police band and a military honor guard. The ceremony is inherited from Westminster.

The photo by Max Dupain shows the steps (right) where I stood to observe the ceremony in North Terrace.

The picture below shows the ceremony of Parliament’s opening in 1939. It was not quite so grand this year.
