I haven’t taken many sports pictures over the past couple of years and felt very rusty today when I tried to get some shots of Michael playing in a tennis tournament at Happy Valley.

This was the best effort, but most of the other 90 or so weren’t worth keeping.

Happy Valley Reservoir

Young Michael played tennis this morning at the impressive new Happy Valley sports centre. Between matches I went for a drive to explore the area.

I was hoping to get into the Happy Valley Reservoir for a look at the pumping station, or whatever other infrastructure exists there, but the entire site was fenced off and closed around the perimeter.

I had to drive up Chandlers Hill Road to get a picture looking down towards the water.

Application to be an astronaut

Maybe it’s because I turn 45 in a couple of weeks, but I thought now is the right time in life to pursue my childhood ambition to become an astronaut, before it’s too late. I was two years old when the first manned space mission landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969. In November 1967, when I was still wearing nappies, the first successful rocket capable of sending a mission to land on the Moon (Saturn V) was launched.

Lucky for me there hasn’t been much progress in the past 44 years in terms of extending man’s extraterrestrial travel capability.

Tour Down Under 2012

Stuart O'Grady at the Tour Down Under

Living in Adelaide it’s hard not to get caught up a little in the excitement of the Tour Down Under, which will be held from January 15-22, 2012.

The Tour Down Under was first held in 1999 and has grown year every year to become the biggest cycling race in the southern hemisphere.

The TDU is a festival of cycling, with a range of associated events that create a party atmosphere across South Australia.

Hotel brawl in Barfold

I don’t get as much time as I would like to browse digitised newspapers at the National Library’s marvellous Trove.

However, a brief visit today yielded an interesting snippet regarding my great-great grandparents James and Sarah Evans.

I knew from Shire of Metcalfe rate books they owned a property at Barfold in Central Victoria between 1866 and 1876.
