Unley Oval

Unley Oval

I went to Unley Oval this afternoon to see Sturt and the Umpires defeat West Adelaide. It was the first time I had been to the ground. Sturt plays most of its home matches there; the others at Adelaide Oval. It’s what might be called a “boutique” stadium, with most of the seating and spectator facilities on the western side of the ground. The highest verified attendance was 22,015 for a league game against Port Adelaide in 1968, although an estimated crowd of 24,000 packed in to see Sturt play Norwood in 1924.

West Adelaide Football Club song

West Adelaide Football Club

I’ve uploaded to YouTube a short video of the West Adelaide Football Club song, part of a highlights package from the club’s 1983 premiership season. Adelaide rental prices

Adelaide rental home

I keep an eye on rental prices in our Adelaide suburb and the surrounding area … that’s Torrensville, Thebarton, Mile End, Hilton and Richmond. Our small three-bedroom house isn’t cheap to rent, but it’s ideally located from our perspective. I can walk to work and son Michael is close to his soccer and tennis interests. There might be a tipping point though, especially if rental prices continue to rise.

PivotX blogging software

PivotX dashboard

I’ve been taking a look tonight at PivotX blogging software. It’s the successor of Pivot, which was a flatfile system I used here many years ago around 2002 before shifting to WordPress. PivotX is partly built with jQuery, Smarty, TinyMCE, PHP and MySQL. I’ve got no intention of abandoning WordPress, but it’s interesting to experiment with alternatives like sNews and PivotX. WordPress is such a large community now; there are so many themes and plugins to choose from. My first impressions of returning to PivotX are mostly positive.

The Big Rocking Horse

The Big Rocking Horse

Today we visited Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills to see the biggest rocking horse in the world. Gumeracha is just 37km from Adelaide and is one of South Australia’s oldest settled areas, dating back to 1839. Today it has a population of 600 people and a toy factory with a big rocking horse. I don’t know what it is about Australian towns and why they feel that size matters, but I guess a big rocking horse is better than a big galah or pineapple.
