Spudway is an iconic Mount Gambier institution.
The Spudway bus parks close to The Border Watch office most nights of the week, selling delicious potato meals.
According to their website, proprietors Paul and Coby Morgan “are determined to make the best spuds in the district, and also offer a larger menu including a bigger spud menu, yiros and for the first time in Mount Gambier a larger takeaway dessert menu comprising of strawberries and cream, doughnuts, cheesecake, chocolate mud cakes and much more!”
The doughnuts are nice.
Yiros is a peculiarly South Australian term. In Western Australia they’re called kebabs and in Victoria they’re souvlakis. According to Wikipedia, they should be called a gyro.
Anyway, Spudway is famous for its spuds. The picture shows rock star Angy Anderson at the bus.
Most nights there is a person wearing a potato suit on the street corner promoting the business. My kids love the spud mascot, who is always friendly despite his fierce appearance.
I like the Spud Murphy (the original mongrel). It comes with bacon, cheese, pineapple, sour cream and coleslaw.
Just to make things interesting, there is a “spud war” in Mount Gambier. A “spud train” operates within metres of the bus on the other side of the Chinese restaurant.
We reported in the paper that legal action is pending between the pair, so I can’t comment much.
I will say however, it’s strange they operate so close to each other.
hi ..i felt compelld to thank you for your kind words ..we at spudway have been operating first in the trailer then in the bus for many years ..we moved from spot on to the cnr for more parking for our customers .and better protection from the elements ..we are the only family owned and operated spud van in mt gambier ,and for that matter in the s/east 0f sa and s/west victoria.we are not rich ppl .but have a passion for spuds ..where our customers ar out most important asset .we no there is a lot more to making great food than the shape of your van ,as we have been down that path before .myself and coby with our children tiana and jarrod have been serving the mount gambier community continuously for a lot of years .with travis dale and reece also helping .we live in mt gambier .and our family are here ,,we use all local suppliers ,all products are fresh ,,we also believe competition is good ,,but not when the competition is mistaken for us ,so remember (IF ITS NOT THE BUS ITS NOT US )there for the community of the mount
“Spudwars!!” What a beauty. I’m sure there’s an indie film waiting to be made to go with that title.
I can’t understand why the spudsuit has a malicious expression but it would fit well with a theme of fierce competition. (Battleship grey doesn’t really seem a very enticing colour for a potato either.)
Yiros must be a skewered presentation of the food; in WA I think we’d call them potato kebabs to distinguish them from all the other kinds. If they were covered in peanut sauce they’d qualify as a type of satay stick.
