Toorak tractors

Toyota PradoIn Victoria we have the term “Toorak tractor” for 4WD vehicles that never leave the bitumen.

These are family cars on city streets, begging the question: Why do people buy 4WDs if they rarely or never use them off road?

Toorak is an affluent Melbourne suburb, where these vehicles are conspicuous by their multiplicity. Apparently Australia isn’t the only country to experience a proliferation of aspiring urban cowboys.

A visiting South African told a story yesterday about people in Johannesburg who pay to have their cars made dirty on Monday morning before they go to work.

He insists this is true, but I have my doubts. According to him there’s a business that specialises in making 4WDs muddy so the owners can claim to have been bush over the weekend.

The innovative proprietor scores twice, because later in the day he washes the cars so they can be garaged cleanly in their suburban abodes.
