Yahoo! has released a new webmail service offering addresses yourname@y7mail.com.
It’s targeted at Australians who weren’t able to get simple addresses with the main Yahoo! domains.
I logged in a few hours after the opening on February 1 and missed michael@ but managed to get gorey@. I hoped to move all my Yahoo account details across to that address, so far without success.
UPDATE (April 30, 2011):
As mentioned in comments, I abandoned the y7mail address and adopted ymail instead, when that became available. I forward emails from my old yahoo.com address to ymail.com
I was lucky enough to secure the same user name (mgorey) for Gmail, Windows Live and Ymail.
Yahoo has now released an impressive beta of its mail service. Highlights include:
- Faster than previous versions of Yahoo! Mail;
- Improved spam protection technology;
- Unlimited storage.

With an improved search design, it’s easier to find emails quickly. The Search box now appears at the top of the page.
I now consider Yahoo! Mail to be the equal of Gmail, albeit with a different style of interface.
However, I’ve integrated Gmail so much into my daily life (Android phone) that I’m unlikely to make a significant switch.

What do you think of the new Yahoo! Mail? Please comment below.

I’ve actually abandoned the y7mail address and switched to ymail instead. Simpler is better. It also means my user name (mgorey) is consistent across all the main providers.
