When visiting a region for the first time I like to sample local food.
At Moss Vale on Saturday I came across Highlands Handmade, which sells art, craft and food from the Southern Highlands.
The shop is privately owned and operated by Angus, but has almost 200 local makers who supply all the products.
Angus photographs the sales and lists them on his website. I’m responsible for the top four on Saturday’s list.
The dot-painting card was made by Emily Jane, a 19-year-old Yuin woman.
The Yuin (pronounced Ba-ju-in) people were the original inhabitants of the NSW South Coast. They are the traditional owners of the land and water from Merimbula to the Shoalhaven River.
According to Wikipedia, there were 12 clans at the time of European settlement.
The carrot cake jam is something I’ve never had before. It tastes just like carrot cake. The ingredients are carrot, pineapple, pear, sugar, lemon, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.
My favourite acquisition was a jar of ginger and lime chilli honey. It’s a small jar (150ml) but packs a mighty taste.
It comes from Anthony’s Sauces and Condiments in Goulburn. Anthony also sells his yummy chilli sauces and jams at markets and shops throughout the region.
